Hello, I’m Ryan, the angler behind RJWFlies.

Fishing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My dad first introduced me to the sport when I was around five years old, taking me sea fishing in Portballintrae on the north coast of Northern Ireland. Those early trips sparked a passion that has stayed with me ever since.

My grandfather also played a huge role in shaping my love of fishing, particularly fly fishing. He was passionate about the sport and regularly shared stories from his younger days. One of his favourites was how it took him two and a half years to land his very first trout on the fly, a McLaren. When I eventually took up fly fishing myself, he was absolutely delighted.

I would regularly stop by after my fishing trips to hear all about my latest adventures and was always keen to hear about the fish I’d caught. I suspect he was a little jealous when I told him I sometimes managed 20 fish in a day, although he never let on!

What he didn’t realise at the time was that, as a beginner, I had a bit of an advantage. I was fishing alongside my best mate, who was competing for the Irish youth international squad, and I was shamelessly copying his techniques and borrowing his flies.

That friendship became a turning point in my angling journey. Having grown up almost exclusively focused on sea fishing, I discovered the world of fly fishing when we met at university. In return for introducing me to fly fishing, I taught him to sea fish. Before long, he had introduced me to fly tying, and I was hooked from the very beginning.

What started as a hobby quickly developed into a lifelong passion. That same friend is now the best man at my wedding, and although we live in different parts of the UK, we still make time to fish together whenever we can.

The Story Behind RJWFlies

RJWFlies was established in August 2025, born from a desire to do more with my passion for fly fishing and fly tying.

What initially began as a hobby, tying flies and sharing photographs of my creations on Instagram, gradually developed into something much bigger. As interest in my flies grew, so did my ambition to develop new patterns, refine existing favourites and share my creations with a wider community of anglers.

A significant milestone came when I was invited to represent Chuck and Duck Fly Tying Materials, an established brand based in Northern Ireland. It’s a company I have a great deal of respect for, and I’m proud to represent a brand that shares my enthusiasm for quality materials and the art of fly tying.

Today, RJWFlies brings together years of fishing experience, countless hours at the tying bench and a genuine passion for developing flies that catch fish.

For me, fly tying is about much more than putting materials on a hook. It’s about understanding how flies behave in the water, learning from time spent on the bank, experimenting with different materials and continually refining patterns to make them as effective as possible.

Every fishing trip provides an opportunity to learn something new. Whether it’s discovering a small change that makes a pattern more effective, developing a new variation of a proven favourite or simply enjoying a successful day on the water, those experiences continue to shape the flies we offer.

More Than Just Flies

RJWFlies was never intended to be just a way of funding my own fishing. I wanted to build something that would allow me to connect with other anglers, share ideas and contribute to a sport that has given me so much enjoyment over the years.

From developing and testing patterns on UK stillwaters to sharing my flies with anglers across the country and beyond, the aim remains the same: to provide quality flies that anglers can have confidence in.

Whether you’re an experienced competition angler, a regular visitor to your local fishery or someone just discovering the world of fly fishing, I’m delighted to have you here.

1. Order Processing & Delivery

How quickly will my order be dispatched?

We take great pride in processing orders quickly. We always aim to get your order packaged and ready for postage as quickly as possible.

We aim to process orders within 1–3 working days of purchase. On rare occasions, this may extend to around five working days during particularly busy periods. RJWFlies remains a small business operated alongside the owners’ full-time employment, and other work commitments can occasionally affect processing times.

If you’re unsure about current processing times before placing an order, please contact RJWFlies directly or subscribe to our email mailing list, where significant updates regarding postage delays will be communicated wherever possible.

What is the difference between processing time and delivery time?

Processing time is the time RJWFlies takes to prepare your order for dispatch. Delivery time is the time taken by the postal service to transport your parcel once it has been dispatched.

Please consider both processing and delivery estimates when planning your purchase.

What UK postage options are available?

We currently offer two UK postage options through our website.

Standard Delivery

Orders are sent using Royal Mail Tracked 48.

Express Delivery

Orders are sent using Royal Mail Tracked 24.

Both services provide tracking, allowing you to follow your parcel’s progress after dispatch.

Can you arrange guaranteed next-day delivery?

We may be able to arrange Royal Mail Special Delivery for customers requiring a faster service with a specified delivery commitment.

This option is not routinely available through our website. If you require an urgent delivery, please contact RJWFlies before placing your order to discuss availability, costs and the delivery options available.

Any delivery commitment will depend on the service arranged and its applicable terms.

What happens if my parcel is lost in the post?

Our parcels are sent using tracked postal services, with appropriate compensation or insurance arrangements.

If your parcel appears to have gone missing, please contact RJWFlies so that we can investigate the situation and liaise with the postal service where necessary.

If a parcel is confirmed lost, we’ll work with you to arrange an appropriate resolution in accordance with the circumstances and your consumer rights.

What happens if delivery is delayed?

We make every reasonable effort to process and dispatch orders promptly. However, delays can occasionally occur due to unusually high order volumes, postal disruption, severe weather or other circumstances outside our reasonable control.

Delivery estimates are not guarantees unless expressly agreed otherwise. Where we become aware of a significant delay affecting your order, we aim to communicate relevant information and help resolve any issues.

Nothing in this section removes any legal obligations or consumer rights applicable to your purchase.

2. International Shipping

Do you ship to the Republic of Ireland and other EU countries?

Yes! RJWFlies ships to the Republic of Ireland and other European Union countries.

Our website automatically adjusts displayed prices where applicable to reflect currency conversion, making it easier for international customers to shop.

All international orders, including those to the Republic of Ireland, are sent using international tracked standard delivery.

The estimated delivery time is 3–6 working days from dispatch. Please note that this is an estimate rather than a guarantee, and delivery may take longer due to postal disruption, customs processing or other circumstances outside our control.

If you have any concerns about international postage, currency conversion or shipping availability, please contact RJWFlies directly before placing your order.

Will I have to pay customs charges or import taxes?

International orders may be subject to additional charges depending on the destination country and the circumstances of the shipment.

These charges may include:

• Import duties.
• Import VAT or other applicable taxes.
• Customs clearance or handling fees charged by the postal operator or another service provider.

Customers are responsible for checking the import requirements applicable to their destination and paying any charges properly payable by them.

These charges are not necessarily included in the product price or postage cost and may be collected separately by the relevant authorities or service providers.

Please check the applicable requirements before placing your order so that you’re aware of any additional costs that may arise.

RJWFlies cannot control customs charges or fees imposed by destination authorities or postal operators.

3. Returns, Refunds & Order Issues

Can I return my order if I change my mind?

We encourage all customers to check their order carefully before completing their purchase, including the selected patterns, quantities and product descriptions.

We do not offer voluntary returns simply because a customer changes their mind beyond any cancellation rights that apply under consumer law.

For online purchases, statutory cancellation rights may apply. Certain personalised products may be exempt from these rights where the relevant legal conditions are met. However, standard flies tied to order are not automatically exempt simply because they are made to order.

If you wish to cancel or return an order, please contact RJWFlies as soon as possible so that we can explain the options available for your particular purchase.

Nothing in this policy is intended to exclude or restrict your statutory rights.

What if I make a mistake with my order?

If there is a mistake with an order, we will do everything in our power to make things right.

Please contact RJWFlies with your order number and details of the issue so that we can look into it and work towards an appropriate resolution.

4. Trade, Club & Fishery Enquiries

Do you supply angling clubs, fisheries and competitive anglers?

Yes! RJWFlies currently supplies flies to the Irish Men’s National Fly Fishing Team, and we’re proud to support anglers competing at national and international level.

We have also worked with a number of angling clubs and fisheries.

5. Our Fly Ranges

What is the RJWFlies Essential Range?

The RJWFlies Essential Range features flies based on patterns tied, tested and developed by Ryan from RJWFlies over a lifetime of fishing.

Every pattern offered on our website has been thoroughly tested and proven to catch fish on UK stillwaters. We take pride in offering patterns that have earned their place in our range through a lifetime of practical experience on the water.

Essential Range flies are tied by our trusted overseas production partners using tying instructions and materials supplied or specified by RJWFlies. This allows us to maintain consistency with our original patterns and the quality standards we expect.

All flies undergo quality checks before dispatch. We take this process seriously, ensuring that our flies meet the high standards Ryan from RJWFlies expects from his own tying. Each batch is checked for consistency, quality and presentation before being sent to our customers.

The Essential Range offers excellent value for money, with the savings associated with larger-scale production passed on to our customers.

What is the RJWFlies Signature Range?

The RJWFlies Signature Range features flies personally hand-tied by Ryan here at RJWFlies, using high-quality hooks and materials.

Ryan is an ambassador for Chuck and Duck Fly Tying Materials, a supplier based in Northern Ireland known for its quality fly-tying products.

We take great pride in our materials and the quality of our finished flies, and our Signature Range reflects the care and attention that goes into tying each pattern by hand.

The difference in price between the Essential and Signature Ranges reflects the costs and time involved in producing the flies, rather than an indication that one range is inherently better quality than the other.

The Essential Range provides excellent value through larger-scale production, while the Signature Range offers flies personally tied by Ryan.

How available is the RJWFlies Signature Range?

The Signature Range is made available according to workload and tying capacity, meaning it may not be available to purchase all year round.

Some patterns may be held in stock and ready for dispatch. However, most Signature Range orders are tied individually to order.

Please allow up to 14 days for made-to-order Signature Range flies to be completed and prepared for dispatch.

Do you accept custom fly orders?

Yes! RJWFlies accepts enquiries for custom fly patterns that are not currently available on our website.

All custom orders are personally hand-tied by Ryan and fall under the RJWFlies Signature Range pricing structure.

Pricing depends on the pattern, materials, hook requirements, quantity and complexity of the requested flies.

Please allow up to 14 days for custom orders to be completed and prepared for dispatch. The actual timeframe may vary depending on the requirements and current workload.

If you have a particular pattern in mind, please contact RJWFlies with as much detail as possible, including photographs or references where available.

We’ll review your request and confirm pricing, availability and estimated processing time before proceeding.

6. Important Product Information

Product descriptions and photographs

We aim to ensure that all product descriptions and photographs accurately represent the flies available for purchase.

As some flies are individually hand-tied, minor variations in appearance may occur between individual flies. These variations are a natural characteristic of handmade products and do not necessarily indicate a fault.
